Toshiyuki Kita Exhibition: Otani Memorial Museum of Art, Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture

A presentation ceremony will be held at the French Embassy (Hiroo, Tokyo) on October 27, 2021.

Currently, the product designer "Toshiyuki Kita Exhibition" is being held at the Otani Memorial Museum of Art in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture. I think a solo exhibition of product design is rare. The theme of life and design is quite impressive. Toshiyuki Kita has offices in Milan and Osaka and has been active as a designer for half a century. He is also a professor at Osaka University of Arts.

The problem with this new coronavirus is not just the threat of a new virus, but it was unpredictable that its impact on a global scale would be so great. It is exactly the spread of viruses by globalization. The spread of virus infection continues in China, South Korea, the United States, Italy, France, Germany, Spain ... Japan. The interdependence between Asia, the EU, and the United States is high, and the traffic of logistics including people is active, which is consistent with the spread of the virus.

Due to the global spread of COVID-19, economic stagnation and damage are said to exceed the Lehman shock. Among them, the term global supply chain is the focus of attention. Wuhan, which is also the epicenter of COVID-19, is home to production plants for the automobile industry in the United States, Japan, and South Korea, and the IT industry such as Apple. The new coronavirus has stopped production and import / export, and the business environment has deteriorated considerably. Therefore, the idea that the global supply chain may be domestically manufactured domestically is born.

The present age is called the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Advanced technologies such as 5G and AI have great potential. There are several advantages and disadvantages of moving from a global supply chain to a domestic supply chain. The first merit is avoidance from negative external factors such as pandemics, conflicts, and wars caused by viruses like this one. Secondly, the global supply chain will be established due to its cost advantage, but advanced technologies such as 5G and AI will be indispensable elemental technologies for future product development. In a sense, it adds new value to the product, so even if it is manufactured in-house in-house, it will have a cost advantage.

What education must be achieved in social design? One is the ability to accept the problems and issues that arise daily in society as one's own. For example, like COVID-19 this time, the response to viruses is at the national level and at the international level. However, in the end, it results in the individual, and the individual's consciousness and behavior increase or decrease the infection. We humans are all-around in the artificial environment of a city, but if we deviate a little, we have no idea what to do and how to do it. Without a smartphone, you wouldn't be able to see what you were doing. In other words, lack of imagination and lack of creativity can be said to be fatal to unexpected disasters.

デザイン

It is a common recognition that the concept of design has expanded, and the perspective on design is no longer simply a product-specific issue such as styling, modeling issues, or ease of use. It is expected to play an upstream role in product development and business development, and in fact, looking at the development of Apple, Dyson, and Lexus, it can be said that design is an important management resource related to corporate strategy, brand value, and even corporate value. On the other hand, design plays a role of being close to human beings and solving problems and issues of human beings and society. In fact, Apple, Dyson, and Lexus are excellent in that they harmonize the essential issues of design with corporate strategy and brand value. The future design movement will move toward solving more social problems and issues. This can be foreseen from the fact that this COVID-19 pandemic reveals the vulnerabilities of global societies, cities, businesses and individuals. In that sense, design activities in various phases of companies, regions (regions), and individuals will be meaningful and important.
